As we head into my favourite time of the year when all the spooks and ghouls come out to play I'm really having to struggle to hold my tongue still on a whole range of topics... but lets try and keep focussed on the here and now for the time being!
Carnival of Souls Kickstarter
We've got 12 days left on our Kickstarter for the 3D Blu-ray release of Alex's amazing conversion of "Carnival of Souls". Apart from this being a highly engaging and influential film in it's own right, Alex's conversion brings out even more of the eerie atmosphere and I think once you've seen this version you won't want to go back to seeing it in 2D. Alex has spent a great deal of his spare time since converting "House on Haunted Hill" working on this and if you check out the trailer you can see just how great a job he's done.
As I am sure most of you are sick of hearing we really appreciate all the support and positive comments we receive on our conversions, every share, like or review we get online usually reaches us and always puts a smile on our collective faces. This really has way exceeded our initial expectations of what we could achieve and the number of backers we could expect.
The unexpected side-effect of this positivity as we saw backer support rising release-on-release was the assumption that this would continue to grow - like an exaggerated income graph from a 1980's comedy going right off the paper and through the roof! Of course as the reality has dawned it's not been quite like we'd imagine and realistically I'm not sure there's much more we can do to convince more people to back our Kickstarter.
I hope that if asked we would get:
Quality: Tick
Functionality: Tick
Design: Tick
Creativity: Tick
Value for Money: Maybe just half a Tick (But considering the effort put in it should be a whole tick!)
Customer Service: Tick
Customer Reviews: Tick
So apart from making it cheaper, which comes with increased sales volume, it's difficult to know what else could be done to grow the number of backers. We know there's still a small but lively market for 3D - 3DFA's Kickstarter for the re-released/updated 3D Blu-ray of "The Bubble" has got over 400 backers in 3 days - double the number we've managed in 3 weeks. Let's be honest globally 400 backers is still ridiculously small for any physical media release but presumably Kino's actual release will be selling in the thousands vs the low hundreds.
While it's somewhat understandable that interest in conversions of public domain titles might be a niche within a niche (within a niche?) - it's really a shame as these films look so, so good in 3D and for me at least a great number of them are more interesting & fulfilling than a lot of the formulaic modern studio output - okay maybe not all of them but most of them!
So after all that, this is really just a little request if you were thinking of backing us on this Kickstarter please jump in now and let's get those numbers up!
PLAN-D
Since our last monthly update I think there's been two new Plan-D titles released which were both from Phil with "His Girl Friday" and "Superman Vol. One" - both of these have had tremendous feedback online.
You can find our whole range and links to purchase the full range from our Plan-D Page.
There's something like another half dozen titles currently underway so expect quite a few more to drop before the year is out!
We're still considering options for International shipping for Plan-D titles - the sudden stopping of International shipping from our production partner was unexpected but equally with the very low sales volumes (where international sales are 20% or less typically) it's difficult to distribute these physically whilst attempting to keep prices as low as possible.
AND FINALLY...
To celebrate the great news that Russ Meyer's films are finally going to get some serious quality releases I thought I'd share a little 3D converted clip from "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" - it's just a quick conversion so the title section is a bit basic but some of the shots are marvellous and of course you can see some of the shots that inspired Tarantino's Death Proof - but in three glorious dimensions!
