EYEPOP-3D is proud to have contributed specialist 2D-to-3D film conversion services to the award-winning VR experience at Trimontium Museum in Melrose, Scotland, which secured the Innovation Award 2025 for its pioneering use of immersive technology in heritage interpretation.
The project demonstrates how existing film & video assets can be transformed through high-quality stereoscopic conversion and successfully integrated into modern virtual reality (VR) museum experiences, extending the life, value, and impact of archival and interpretive footage without the need for costly reshoots.

Breathing New Depth into Existing Film Content

As part of Trimontium Museum’s VR installation, sections of previously produced 2D film material were enhanced through stereoscopic 3D conversion by EYEPOP-3D. This process added realistic depth, scale, and spatial coherence to flat footage, allowing it to sit naturally alongside fully realised virtual environments.
For museums and cultural institutions, this approach offers a cost-effective alternative to producing entirely new content, enabling existing films to be reused in engaging, immersive formats while deliver a premium out of home experience.
2D-to-3D Conversion for Museum VR

Converting traditional 2D film for use in VR presents unique challenges. Footage must not only function in stereo but also feel comfortable, believable, and immersive when viewed in a headset. EYEPOP-3D’s conversion process focuses on:
Carefully balanced depth grading for long-form viewing
Scene-by-scene depth continuity to avoid visual fatigue
Preservation of original film intent and detail
Seamless integration with CGI and virtual environments

The converted sequences created by EYEPOP-3D allowed Trimontium Museum’s VR experience to blend live-action and interpretive film with digital reconstructions, strengthening immersion while respecting the authenticity of the original material.
Supporting an Award-Winning Heritage Experience

Trimontium Museum’s Innovation Award 2025 recognises how immersive technology can transform visitor engagement with archaeology and history. EYEPOP-3D’s contribution highlights the important role stereoscopic film conversion plays in supporting award-winning VR projects, particularly where budgets, schedules, or archival constraints limit new production.
By upgrading existing film assets to stereoscopic 3D, the project demonstrated how heritage organisations can embrace innovation while making practical and sustainable use of their content libraries.
Collaboration with Deep Vision Studios

The VR experience was designed and produced by sister agency Deep Vision Studios, who integrated EYEPOP-3D’s converted stereoscopic film into the wider virtual environment. This collaboration ensured that all elements: CGI, static imagery, and converted film worked together cohesively within the headset.
The Trimontium project stands as an example of how specialist 2D to 3D conversion studios can work alongside VR developers to enhance the visual qualities of existing materials for immersion without compromising historical accuracy or visitor comfort.
Unlocking New Value from Existing Film Assets

For museums, archives, and visitor attractions, the success of Trimontium’s VR installation reinforces the value of repurposing existing 2D films through 3D conversion. This approach:
Extends the lifespan of archival and interpretive footage
Reduces production costs compared to full re-shoots
Revitalises aging filmed content
Enhances visitor engagement through depth and presence
Drives footfall by offering new experiences
EYEPOP-3D specialises in making this transition accessible, delivering high-quality, cost-effective 2D-to-3D conversion tailored for museums, education, and cultural storytelling.
Looking Ahead: 2D to 3D as a Foundation for Immersive Heritage

As more museums explore VR and immersive media, the ability to convert existing film into compelling stereoscopic experiences will become increasingly valuable. Trimontium Museum’s Innovation Award win shows that 2D to 3D film conversion is not a compromise, but a powerful creative and technical tool when executed with care and expertise.
EYEPOP-3D is proud to support projects that push the boundaries of heritage interpretation — helping institutions bring their stories into a new dimension while preserving and enhancing the content they already own.
